Advanced Cataract Care for Eyes with Glaucoma
At our centre, cataract surgery in a patient with glaucoma is approached differently from routine cataract surgery. Our dedicated glaucoma expertise allows us to assess not only the cataract, but also the health of the optic nerve, visual field, intraocular pressure, target pressure and existing glaucoma treatment. This comprehensive assessment helps us formulate a surgical plan that addresses both the cataract and the underlying glaucoma while protecting the remaining vision.
Management of Complex Cases
We are equipped to manage complex cataract cases in glaucomatous eyes, including patients with advanced glaucoma, previous glaucoma surgery, glaucoma drainage devices, small pupils, shallow anterior chambers, zonular weakness and other challenging ocular conditions. Careful preoperative planning, appropriate surgical techniques and meticulous perioperative IOP management are particularly important in these eyes, where even transient pressure fluctuations may be clinically significant.
Advanced Phacoemulsification & Personalized IOL Selection
Our centre provides advanced phacoemulsification with individualized IOL selection, taking into consideration the patient's glaucoma severity, optic nerve status, visual field, ocular anatomy and visual needs. While premium lenses may be appropriate for selected glaucoma patients, they are not suitable for every eye. We therefore emphasize personalized IOL counselling, with the goal of achieving useful, high-quality vision rather than simply offering the most technologically advanced lens.
Combined Cataract and Glaucoma Procedures
For patients in whom both cataract and glaucoma require surgical intervention, we offer combined cataract and glaucoma procedures tailored to the severity and type of glaucoma. These may include phacoemulsification combined with minimally invasive glaucoma procedures such as GATT, or more definitive glaucoma surgeries such as trabeculectomy and glaucoma drainage device implantation, when a greater reduction in IOP is required.
