Comprehensive Eye Examination
Many eye conditions, including glaucoma, cataract, and diabetic eye disease, develop slowly and without obvious symptoms in their early stages. A comprehensive eye examination is the single best way to catch problems early, protect your vision, and keep your eyes healthy for the long term.
Our examination goes well beyond a basic vision check — it is a thorough, head-to-toe assessment of how your eyes are working and how healthy they are. A typical comprehensive examination includes:
- Visual acuity testing: Checking how clearly you see at distance and near, to identify whether you need glasses or a change in your current prescription.
- Refraction: Precisely measuring the exact lens power needed to give you the sharpest possible vision.
- Slit-lamp examination: A detailed, magnified look at the front of the eye, including the eyelids, cornea, iris, and lens, to check for infection, dryness, cataract, and other conditions.
- Intraocular pressure measurement (tonometry): Checking the pressure inside your eye, an essential step in detecting glaucoma.
- Dilated fundus examination: Using eye drops to widen the pupil so we can examine the retina, macula, and optic nerve at the back of the eye, where conditions such as glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, and macular degeneration first appear.
- Colour vision and other functional tests: Additional checks performed as needed, depending on your age, symptoms, and risk factors.
We tailor the examination to your age and health history — children, adults, and older adults each have different risks and needs. Based on your results, we will explain our findings in plain language, let you know whether any further testing or treatment is needed, and recommend how often you should be seen again.
